Learning in Reception

Play is fundamental in the Early Years curriculum and reinforces all development and learning for young children.  Most children play spontaneously, although some may need adult support, and it is through play that they develop academically, creatively, physically, socially and emotionally.

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to provide well-planned experiences based on children’s unprompted play, both indoors and outdoors.  This is an important way in which we can support our young children to learn with enjoyment and challenge.

We aim to ensure a balance of child-initiated and adult-led play-based activities using our judgement and knowledge of the children in our care in deciding what the balance should be.  When a child engages in a self-chosen pursuit, this is a child initiated activity.  Other child-initiated activities may be instigated when the child brings something to the setting - for example, during show and tell.  This could lead to our learning changing focus to support this new interest.

To enhance the children's learning experiences, we teach the school curriculum through a variety of topics.  Please find topic planners below for the academic year 2017-2018.  Alongside these topics, we monitor their progress using the Characteristics of Effective Learning.
